NORTON, Mass. — Tiger Woods did not have a scientific basis for moving back into the briefer Scotty Cameron putter he’s mostly relied on for two or more decades after a short rest from it throughout the PGA Championship earlier this month.

“Only stubbornness,” Woods said Thursday following his opening-round 3-under 68 in the Northern Trust, the very first event from the three-week FedEx Cup playoffs. “I had been practicing with another person to make sure I could find some reps and find some sense, and all a sudden — hell with it, I will simply place [this one] in drama and see how it moves. It worked.”

Woods went into another variant of this Scotty Cameron putter, he stated, since the longer period place less strain on his back and allowed him to practice somewhat more.

The overdue decision to return to the briefer version repaid in Thursday’s first round.

Beginning on the 10th tee TPC Boston, Woods played the more difficult back nine in even par prior to becoming hot on the other hand. He birdied four of the first eight holes before a wayward tee shot resulted in a bogey at the ninth, his final hole of the afternoon.

“Once I gave myself any opportunities [on the front nine], I left them,” said Woods, who paths a bunch of four players from four shots and can be tied to 30th.

Woods wrapped into a 16-footer in the very long par-3 next to get into red figures. He followed with another birdie after getting up and down from the greenside bunker in the brief par-4 fourth gap. After pars in the fifth and sixth, he also converted a set of 7-footers to get birdies at Nos. 8 and 7 prior to the hiccup in the past.

“I enjoy the speed of the greens,” he explained.

His initial playoff event didn’t come with no drama. Woods was spotted placing ice-cold water bottles onto his throat ahead of his round. He explained it had been nothing more than to cool off several sexy oils he’d utilized to loosen things up.

“My lower back is employed to it. It is used to it. We all do it all of the time so I can become loose,” Woods explained. “I decided to put some on my throat, and it is much less tolerant as my lower spine, therefore it becomes awfully hot. It is common in virtually every other game and especially baseball, those men put some pretty sexy stuff in their thighs, but you eventually become accustomed to this. My lower back is really resistant to it, but my neck isn’t.”

Woods is entering a possibly hectic stretch which could see him perform four out of their next five months. Following the Northern Trust, He’s committed to playing next week’s BMW Championship in Olympia Fields just out of Chicago. The next week is that the Tour Championship, which he won a couple of decades back.

For this one, however,”I have to get to Atlanta first; I am not at all,” Woods explained.

The best 30 players around the FedEx Cup points record progress into the Tour Championship at East Lake; Woods entered this week at 49th location. After that occasion, there’s a week off until the U.S. Open at Winged Foot, that starts Sept. 17. The important was initially scheduled for June but has been pushed back due to the three-month shutdown driven from the coronavirus.

“The best 30 men who do not qualify for East Lake, they are likely to play with a hefty load , those 30 men are,” Woods explained.

Thursday’s round was a powerful initial step in the pursuit for among these 30 spots. The 68 matched how he began in the PGA Championship two weeks ago. In TPC Harding Park, however, Woods fought with all the longer putter the remainder of the week, never really adjusting to the speed of these greens.

“Had one great day [at the PGA Championship], the very first day, then after that I did not actually putt well,” said Woods, who started with a round 3-under or even better for only the third time since the beginning of 2019.
