Tiger Woods possibly plotting a putter change in time for PGA Championship

SAN FRANCISCO — Tiger Woods seems set to earn a rare putter change on Thursday if the PGA Championship starts at TPC Harding Park.

Woods was occupying this week with another variant of the Scotty Cameron Newport II putter he is used for the vast majority of his profession, one which allows him to alter the weighting; it’s also more.

Steve Stricker, who over the years has contributed Woods aid with his placing, played with a nine-hole practice round with Woods in Harding Park on Wednesday and liked what he saw.

“I asked him concerning the putter change,” said Stricker, the U.S. Ryder Cup captain that helped Woods in the Presidents Cup this past year. “It is essentially the exact same putter with a little more flexibility. He is ready to alter the weights around just a bit, but the span is the gap.

“He has got a bit more length on the market, and that is just so he could practice just a little bit more without back pain. That is what excites him is that he managed to devote a great deal of time together with this particular club, and seeing him it seemed precisely the exact same for me. He wrapped the ball ”

Woods came in Harding Park on Sunday and played with an 18-hole practice round. He played 9 holes Monday, practiced on the range and putting green on Tuesday and played with another 9 holes Wednesday. After playinghe moved back into the putting green to get more work.

The Scotty Cameron version Woods has employed for nearly all his career has a little of its legendary status. He put it in play before this 1999 Byron Nelson Classic and used it to get over 11 years. During the stretch, he won 13 leading championships.

In 2010, Woods switched into a Nike brand campaigning to get a period and after he returned to action after his fourth back operation at 2018, he had 2 distinct TaylorMade version putters before switching back into the Cameron. Woods won the Tour Championship, the Masters and the Zozo Championship together with the first Cameron. He’s won roughly $94-million in prize money with that putter.

The Cameron he has had a lot of success has demonstrated some wear and tear. It’s a number of nicks and dings but the weighting is about the rear of the blade; the newer variant which marking is on the front of the putter.

Over time, Woods has experimented with other Cameron putters and had the one he’s expected to utilize Thursday in his luggage last summer in The Open at Royal Portrush. But he chose to not use it throughout the tournament, in which he missed the cut.

Woods said after his 40th-place tie in the Memorial Tournament three months ago that he did not adapt well to getting greater break in the greens. He had been 56th in the area in strokes profit putting and had a few difficulties with brief ton.

In Harding Park, Woods has set a fantastic bit of work into lag placing, an important factor in a significant tournament, where hitting it shut is much more of a struggle.

“I anticipate great things form him whether he could keep his body functioning,” said Stricker, imagining the spine stiffness problems which Woods faces in the best of times. “With this weather, it is a challenge. It is cool, it is moist, so I guess that will likely be the biggest obstacle for him that week will be to have the ability to feel as though his body is 100 per cent and give it a tear.”
