GRAND BLANC, Mich. — Brett Quigley was excited to be competing again he can hardly break par. He settled down Saturday to an 8-under 64 along with a one-shot lead from the Ally Challenge, the first PGA Tour Champions occasion in five weeks.
Quigley played with bogey-free in Warwick Hills. Monday qualifier Carlos Franco had a 64 using two eagles and had been at the group shot that comprised Jim Furyk (66) in his introduction to the 50-and-older circuit.
Tommy Armour was included in one shot of the lead after a birdie on the once-rowdy par-3 17th along with also an 8-foot level save from the rear bunker to get a 68.
Quigley was 11-below 133 as he attempts to win for the second time this season on the PGA Tour Champions. He even won a brand new tournament in Morocco, and only over a month afterwards, the excursion closed down due to this COVID-19 pandemic. He could not wait to begin again, and he then immediately bogeyed his opening hole Friday.
“I had been attempting to take 20 beneath front nine . I was only attempting to force all after being away for so long,” Quigley said. “A bit more relaxed now. … Made a lot of birdies it seems pretty great.”
Furyk looms as possibly his main challenger.
He was one of three players, such as Mike Weir and K.J. Choi, who flipped 50 while the PGA Tour Champions was closed down. Furyk, a past winner in Warwick Hills as it hosted on the Buick Open on the PGA Tour, will Attempt to become the first player to win his Champions introduction since Miguel Angel Jimenez in the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at 2014.
Furyk won the Buick Open at 2003 and double was a runner-up. About the PGA Tour, he took par or even better 59 from the 60 rounds at Warwick Hills. He said the trick was to keep it in the brief grass get the most out of wedges and short irons. That worked when he was younger, and he anticipates the exact same now.
“If I was playing well, I did lots of damage ,” Furyk said.
Furyk remains one of the best 100 at the world standing and can play at the PGA Championship next week. However he has not won because the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town at 2015, and he has not had many opportunities.
“I am excited about getting in the combination, acquiring some nerves,” Furyk said. “I have got a great deal of experience to fall back , but it is going to nonetheless be a tiny new.”
Armour and Billy Andrade shared the lead after the first day, and just Armour remained in the combination with a couple important putts in the end. Andrade did not make a birdie until the 16th hole and dropped from contention with a 74.
Bernhard Langer, the Charles Schwab Cup leader, also dropped back in the end of the round. He had been within two of their guide until bogeys on the 15th and 16th holes. He gave him a 70, also he was four shots behind.
In the Buick Open, the gallery in the par-3 17F was famously rowdy, although not very Phoenix Open levels. As there are no audiences, the PGA Tour Champions needed a movie board supporting the green which revealed fans cheering. It was not much, but it was something.
“It is such an exciting place for every one of us,” Quigley said. “You just anticipate this energy, then for it to not be there yesterdayand then to eventually hear some of it now was a return to regular golf. It’s somewhat eerie outside here not having lovers ”
