There’s growing alarm in Italy about a resurgence of this coronavirus, reports Nick Squires at Rome, together with 642 new cases reported Wednesday – the maximum amount since May 23. It was a major growth on Tuesday’s total of 403.
Saturday also saw a sharp spike in amounts, together with 629 new cases reported nationally.
In part, the statistics reveal just how many swabs were completed — on Wednesday there was an especially large amount, over 71,000 compared to 54,000 the evening before.
But because Italy’s draconian three-month lockdown finished, people are becoming less watchful and more relaxed, especially concerning mask-wearing and social distancing.
Young men and women are coming together in massive parties in pubs and in the shore, since the summer vacations hit their peak.
In response, the Authorities on Sunday ordered all of clubs and discos to close down, saying they’d become the focus of new illnesses.
A lot of those new instances are individuals returning from vacation, especially from countries like Greece, Spain and Croatia, but also areas closer to home like Sardinia, in which an whole resort was put in quarantine on the island of Santo Stefano from the La Maddalena archipelago.
In its decree on Sunday, the authorities also made it required to wear masks indoors and out nightspots and in parties in roads and piazzas from 6pm till 6am. Roberto Speranza, the health minister, stated that if diseases continue growing, then the remaining portion of the nation’s colleges on September 14 can be put in jeopardy.
