PATNA: Congress on Wednesday named former Union minister Tariq Anwar as its candidate to the legislative council elections in Bihar.
“Congress president Sonia Gandhi has approved the candidature of Tariq Anwar as party nominee for the ensuing biennial election to the Bihar Legislative Council to be elected from the MLAs,” AICC general secretary Mukul Wasnik stated in an announcement.
Anwar, a close confidant of former PM Rajiv Gandhi, had stopped the Congress to make the Nationalist Congress Party with Sharad Pawan and PA Sangma at 1999.
Anwar returned into the Congress before this 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He contested Bihar’s Katihar Lok Sabha seat .
Biennial election for nine empty seats in the Bihar legislative council is scheduled to be held on July 6. Members of the state legislative assembly will vote within this survey.
According to its own strength from the Bihar assembly, Congress can win among those nine seats at the surveys. Of the remainder eight chairs, three per will go in favour of the RJD and JD(U) and the remaining two seats to the BJP.
June 25 is the final date for filing nomination papers. Tariq is expected to record his papers prior to the returning officer on Thursday.
