GUWAHATI: Leader of peasants’ rights firm Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) Akhil Gogoi, who’s lodged in Guwahati Central Jail on charges of sedition, on Saturday evening tested positive for Covid-19.
At least 55 offenders from the prison, combined with Gogoi, have contracted the virus thus far – like 33 on Saturday – triggering fears the prison may become a brand new Covid-19″hotspot”.
Akhil was in prison since December last year because of his role in protests from the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). A case was filed against him from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) because of his alleged nexus by Maoists.
Kamrup Metropolitan District announced the Guwahati Central Jail premises as a containment zone.
Dasarath Das, inspector general of prisons, Assam, while confirming that the evolution, told TOI,”Akhil Gogoi and also additional inmates tested positive for Covid-19 from the antigen test on Saturday evening. All collectively, 15 inmates failed antigen tests”
It isn’t known yet the number of these got infected with the virus. The IGP said people were limited because of the rapid spike in the amount of instances.
Gogoi was in detention since December 16, 2019, in connection with an NIA instance (13/2019) under Sections 120B, 253A, 153B of the IPC and Sections 18 and 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. The authorities detained him from Jorhat on December 12, once the anti-CAA protests turned violent in Guwahati.
The prison authority has begun running the Covid-19 test after the leadership of their NIA court. KMSS had previously claimed that Gogoi was infected with the virus. The attorney representing Gogoi said his client was suffering from fever, cough, and body pains throughout the past couple of days.
Das said swab collection for its Covid testing is happening in the prison and above 135 inmates experienced tests up to now. Altogether, 115 swabs were obtained on July 4, July 5 and July 7 and 20 offenders were analyzed from the rapid antigen test. The majority of the positive instances from the prison were connections of two imprisoned members KMSS – Dharjya Konwar and Bittu Sonowal – that tested positive on Wednesday night.
All positive patients are changed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital and Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital, Guwahati (MMCH).
