QUEPEM: Kushavati violated its banks in the typical place, for the very first time this monsoon, on Sunday.
The water level in Kushavati began climbing on Saturday night following heavy rain till Sunday morning.
The bridge which connects Avedem-Cotombi into the Margao-Quepem street was underwater on Saturday night. A region of Paroda in the bridge into the Parvat street intersection, approximately one km to the west, was also flooded.
Traffic from Margao into Quepem, Curchorem and Sanguem was redirected through Chandor until Sunday morning.
Many villagers risked their own lives regaining coconuts floating to the water within the bridge.
Considering that part of the bridge comes beneath Avedem-Cotombi-Chaifi, the panchayat had passed a resolution a couple of years ago to build a new bridge, approximately 200m apart from the present one.
“The settlement was shot under the disaster management committee. The government had resisted the amount because of its structure, but the money has been redirected because of floods in Canacona along with the bridge remains a fantasy,” sarpanch Alelluiah Afonso explained.
“Then chief minister Manohar Parrikar had scrutinized the underwater bridge and had promised us that a new bridge could be constructed in precisely the exact same website, but in a greater level. Yet, nothing has happened ,” Afonso explained.
The Paroda bridge has been assembled post-Liberation through Dayanand Bandodkar’s initial three-member ministry’s tenure.
