CHENNAI: PMK creator S Ramadoss on Sunday requested the Centre to guarantee the protection of Sri Lankan Tamils and security of the fundamental rights. His appeal comes in the wake of Sri Lankan premier Mahinda Rajapaksa led political party winning a vast majority in the Sri Lankan elections.
With Mahinda Rajapaksa’s party winning a virtually two-third bulk, it might allow the ruling alliance to present modifications in the constitution, particularly the 13th modification introduced according to the Indo — Sri Lanka accord in 1987.
The 13th amendment guaranteed basic civil rights to Tamils living in the north and southern areas, besides supplying specific powers to the countries from the Island state.
With Mahinda Rajapaksa returning to power along with his brother Gothabaya Rajapaksa being the president of Sri Lanka, there’s a perceived fear among the Tamils in the island country. Indian authorities should ensure the security of the staying Tamils and ensure their fundamental rights, Ramadoss said.
