The excise department stated that they revised the Covid fee after taking inventory of the liquor costs in different nations. “We confirmed the MRP of spirits in different nations, particularly in the Arabian West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. We discovered that liquor prices are comparatively cheaper in the neighbouring countries. Apprehending illegal stream of this non-duty paid spirits from other countries to Odisha, we chose to update our MRP of this spirits by rationalizing the speed of particular Covid fee,” an excise official said.

While introducing online/home delivery of spirits on May 25, the state authorities enforced the particular Covid fee and raised the costs of all kinds of foreign spirits and spirits from 50percent of the MRPs of all 2019-20. Sources said the authorities earned about Rs 200 crore revenue in the specific Covid commission on liquor. Liquorshops, that were closed in the aftermath of Covid-19 pandemic because March 22, were permitted to market the alcoholic beverage just through internet booking and home delivery from May 25.

By July 1, the state authorities permitted counter sale of spirits along with the present online/home shipping system. The selling of spirits throughout the counters has been permitted only between 7 am and 6 pm. Bars, nevertheless, have yet to be permitted to reopen.
