Delta Air Lines will furlough 1,941 of its pilots at October unless it may reach a cost-cutting arrangement with the workers’ labour union, the airline said Monday.

U.S. airlines which approved $25 billion in federal help are banned from cutting occupations via Sept. 30.

“We’re just six months to this pandemic and just 25percent of our earnings are recovered,” stated John Laughter, Delta’s senior vice president of flight operations at a memo to pilots, which had been viewed by CNBC.  Laughter said the airline does not expect a fast turnaround in demand.

This summer, Delta cautioned two,558 of its own pilots regarding possible furloughs. The amount was reduced by over 1,800 pilots that took early retirement packages, but Laughter cautioned it is insufficient to steer clear of the furloughs entirely.

“With roughly 11,200 busy pilots on the roster after the September 1 [voluntary early retirement] departures, we’re just overstaffed, and we’re confronted with a remarkably tough choice,” he wrote. Laughter said letters are going out this week to pilots hired on or after July 17, 2017.

Delta said staying pilots could prevent furloughs entirely with a 15% reduction to minimal cover.

The Air Line Pilots Association, Delta’s pilots’ labour union did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Laughter stated that the corporation will need approximately 9,450 pilots for summertime 2021,”that we anticipate will be the summit flying to another 12-18 months”

Separately, Delta said its COO Gil West intends to retire in the end of September later 12 years in the Atlanta-based airline. West started soon before Delta’s 2008 merger with Northwest and has been appointed Delta’s COO in 2014.

West also directed many ancillary companies at Delta, like its own aircraft maintenance device, and that the airline has expanded in the last several decades, Delta said in a press release on Monday.
